I believe both right and left will agree with the message, albeit for different reasons.
Let’s try Janeane The Acerbic Goblin at Daily Kos to prove our point:
With Harry’s capitulating to the Republicans yet again, he truly has no respect from anyone. The left hates him because he constantly undermines them and kowtows to every GOP whim, and the GOP hate him simply because he’s a Democrat (ableit in name only). I have heard no one defend his atrocious, cowardly actions, and the GOP is crowing right now. They are not crowing in praise of Reid getting tough with his own party, but they are crowing because the GOP have embarrassed Obama, the Dems, and they had Reid do it for them. If there was ever a man in American that no one respects or likes, it’s Harry Reid. Even Bush and Cheney, even today, have their defenders. No one will rise to defend Reid. He is the most isolated wimp on Earth. That’s the way he wants it, that’s the way he gets it. He’s going to have to learn to live with that. In the meantime, another person loses their health insurance and could possibly die because of it. Harry Reid doesn’t care about that person or anyone without health insurance. The GOP’s feelings are much too important to be hurt over something as frivilous as health care.
Why are people on the left saying this? Kathyrn-Jean Lopez at The Corner:
CNN’s Dana Bash reports that Harry Reid has announced that there will be no Senate vote until after August on health care. From Ohio, Ed Henry reports that the a senior administration official tells him that Reid’s comment is not changing the president’s plans: He still wants votes in both houses before August recess.
However, Brian Beutler at TPM:
It’s looked unlikely for at least a couple weeks now, but unless events intercede to convince congressional leaders to delay August recess, today will likely be remembered as the day when Democrats admitted they’d be unable to pass health care reform bills in the House and Senate before August recess.
“We just heard today that, well, we may not be able to get the bill out of the Senate by the end of August, or the beginning of August,” President Obama said. “That’s OK. I just want people to keep on working. Just keep working.”
Ed Morrissey:
In doing so, Reid more or less pulled the rug out from under Obama and Pelosi at the same time. Obama had told the nation that “the time for talk is through,” but Reid essentially told the nation that Obama was flat-out wrong and that more debate and discussion was absolutely necessary. Reid now controls 60 votes in the Senate, so if Pelosi actually did have the votes to win on the floor for ObamaCare, Reid could have rushed the House version through the Senate and won, if the only problem was Republicans. Neither of them have the votes now, and likely won’t have them after their members go home and get an earful from their constituents about spending, unemployment, and the deficit.
John Cole:
It is over. They’ll find a reason to kill it over the recess.
Steve Benen with some more quotes from the President:
“I want the bill to get out of the committees, and then I want that bill to go to the floors, and then I want that bill to be reconciled between the House and the Senate, and then I want to sign a bill. And I want it done by the end of this year. I want it done by the fall.
“Whenever I hear people say it’s happening to soon, I think that’s a little odd. We’ve been talking about health reform since the days of Harry Truman, and he’s saying reform is coming too soon. ‘Too soon’?”
August is bound to be interesting.
Jennifer Rubin in Commentary:
But it may just be that some things — like a government takeover of 17 percent of the economy and the eradication of private health insurance — can only be rushed so much. Nancy Pelosi is now saying there may be no voting in August. The House Energy and Commerce Committee again canceled its mark-up, suggesting it doesn’t have the votes to get it out of committee, let alone passed on the floor. Could it be that the president’s pearls of wisdom didn’t turn the tide last night? Well, Rep. Jim Cooper, who played a pivotal role in the demise of HillaryCare, says a bill is “months away.”
